An ambitious urban development is taking shape in Pujiang, a town south of Chengdu, China, with the goal of delivering a sustainable, high-quality lifestyle. Already known for its clean air and green hills, the project aims to preserve this natural setting while minimizing environmental impact and addressing future risks.

A simple tourist platform overlooks the town and the surrounding Qionglai mountain range. Studio MVRDV was invited to reimagine the Pujiang platform, reshaping it to better align with its landscape and with the long-term vision for the area.

The studio’s concept is rooted in restoration. Where the hill was once flattened, it is now returned; reinterpreted in a modern form. The result is a hill-shaped pavilion with a green roof, creating what MVRDV describes as a “telescopic” effect: a floor that slopes downward beneath a hill-shaped ceiling. The pavilion functions both as a viewing platform and as an event space.

What we particularly appreciate at The Greener Space is the material and environmental strategy. Bio-based materials, notably wood, were chosen to promote wider adoption within an industry in China that remains cautious about its use. Natural ventilation supports climate regulation, while a geothermal heat pump supplies part of the required energy. Rainwater is collected, local plants reflect native biodiversity, and greenery helps regulate temperature. Direct sunlight is reduced through the overhanging roof design.
